Perlizbeth says In This Country is a dance work based on her own experiences growing up as a Filipino American and not knowing who she was or what her culture was. She recalls being a 5 year old in kindergarten and drawing what she thought was a self portrait, only to be surprised when her teacher told her that she had had the skin color and hair color wrong, and that her eyes were not blue. In her young mind she perceived herself as being the same as everyone else around her. “Maybe I was just projecting what I wanted to look like?” She describes this as a formative moment in childhood that began her questioning of who she was in the world. “That’s just one instance, there’s so many instances especially as a minority in America, it’s like Who am I? Where do I fit in? and that’s really the jist of In This Country. Where do we belong in this country? Who are we in this country? What are our goals and dreams in this country? and what are our roadblocks in this country?”
The evening length dance work hones in on the casts backgrounds and identities. “I can relate to them as who I am, but I wanted them to show their place and how they feel and what they are searching for in this country.” Perlizbeth describes the work as a lot of solo development for each dancer, with moments of relationality of those identities. “There’s a lot of coming together and coming apart, and seeing each other and not seeing each other. I think the work show’s that as an individual we can only handle so much, but coming together we can hold so much more, we can hold so much more space."
Fly on a Wall’s Big Show is a program that awards an artist $2,000 in unrestricted funds and a weekend of shows produced by Fly on a Wall. The Big Show recipient is chosen through an application process that is available to artists who have participated in Fly on a Wall’s annual works-in-process series Excuse The Art (ETA). The 2023 Big Show artist, Perlizbeth De Leon is presenting In This Country, an evening length work for a trio of dancers. “The Big Show platform has felt so important for me because, not only does it give me a space to showcase my work and have others watch it, it’s even just the idea that someone feels like I should be seen and my work should be seen makes me feel like I have a voice in this ecosystem of dance. Just the offer alone has instilled a confidence in me to create this work.” - Perlizbeth De Leon
