ABOUT THE WORK:
This dance work is rooted in the real lives of Joy and Ginny. It grows out of their ongoing friendship/collaboration, and is built through a process of accumulation from which a collection of fragments/vignettes has emerged that honor the complexity of two individuals inhabiting shared time without dissolving into sameness. Distinct, yet deeply entangled. A living negotiation between trust and autonomy, listening inward and leaning outward.
Two texts inform the creation of the work, David Whyte’s “Just Beyond Yourself”
“Just beyond yourself. It's where you need to be. Half a step into self-forgetting and the rest restored by what you'll meet. There is a road always beckoning. When you see the two sides of it closing together at that far horizon and deep in the foundations of your own heart at exactly the same time, that's how you know it's the road you have to follow. That's how you know it's where you have to go. That's how you know you have to go. That's how you know. Just beyond yourself, it's where you need to be.”
And George Musser in conversation with Annika Harris in her book “Lights On”
“...when we walk across a room, we are not gliding passively through a pre-existing expanse. Something is happening. There’s a machinery at work, a grinding of gears, deep within nature to produce the experience of being here and being there. When you stretch an arm to grasp a pencil, and it’s just outside your reach, something is acting to thwart you, creating what you perceive to be distance. And when we ask what that machinery might be, we have arrived at the outermost frontier of modern physics.
